The Western Anchor Of The Himalayas
Nanga Parbat, the second jn Pakistan and the 9th highest peak in the world. It has quite splendid view of the greatest precipices in the world. It is also notorious as a ‘Killer Mountain’ and also famous with the name of “Hundred Faces”.
Influenced by the old legends, local believes that beyond the Nanga Parbat is an eternal abode of fairies and demons who frequently unleash their fury over the undesirable intruders in the shape of ‘roaring avalanches’. The locals, thus alarmingly warns mountaineers to keep their feet off this dangerous mountain. The first visual, record of this mountain was a canvas painted by Rudolf Schiafintweit, a German traveler who beheld this mighty peak in 1852.
A jeep 6-hour drive takes us to Tarashing (2911m) a green alpine village in the Astore Valley to begin our trek. Starting with an easy to moderate walking of two to four hours daily along the lateral moraines and flat greens, and crossing the BazhinGiacier, we will reach Mazeno High camp after five days. Shaigiri 3660m offers a superb view of the south face of Nanga Parbat and Rupal peak 5584m. We have one day free to have an ample opportunity for further exploration, rest and acclimatization in preparation for the Mazino pass. If someone have the will to climbing then Rupal peak is the best choice.
Crossing of the Mazino Pass, which is the strenuous and sensational climax of the trek. Following the lateral moraine of Toshain Glacier with views back to Leila and Rupal Peaks on one side and Nanga Parbat on other to Loiba will take 8-9 hours. The camp is a green meadow at about 4200m. Then starts lovely easy but not easy at all time descend down to KKH through lush green meadows and steep barren we will end up this excellent 10 days trek near Chilas for a further drive to Islamabad.
It is one of the best treks in the western most of the great Himalayan range. Nanga Parbat (8,125 m) is the second highest peak in Pakistan and 8th highest peak in the world. Nanga Parbat means “the naked mountain” it is also known as the killer mountain, because of die difficulties of reaching the summit. The first ascent was an almost miraculous solo ascent without oxygen in 1953 by the German Hermann Buhl its sheer south face, called the Rupal ace, rises over 5000 m from the valley floor to the summit and offers trekkers breathtaking close up views. The North or Raikot face lunges over 7000 m from the summit to the Indus River, forming one of the world’s deepest gorges. We have to trek around this great massif.
