Mashabrum and Gondogoro la Trek

The Hushe valley offers superb trekking and mountaineering options. The Gondogoro Pass at 5600 meters above sea level gives the panoramic view of the central Karakoram Mountains including K-2, the second highest peak in the world.

Trek up the base camp of Mashabrum Peak at 7,821 metres (25,659 ft), the 22nd highest mountain in the world, just takes a day hike. 

Itinerary

Day 01  

Arrive Islamabad, transfer to Hotel.

Day 02

We go to the domestic terminal at the airport from where we take the spectacular flight (weather permitting). Across the mountains to Skardu. If flight does not operate, we will have to drive from Rawalpindi to Skardu, a long tiring journey compensated for buy the spectacular scenery. The rest of the day is free. Overnight in hotel at Skardu.

Day 03  

Another day in Skardu (or enroute if the flight is cancelled and we have to reach Skardu by road). There are several excursions which can be made to the Satpara Lake about 4miles away, or a clamp to the top of the Skardu rock to see the remains of the fortress built there some 150 years ago from where there are superb view of the Shigar and Indus River. Overnight in hotel at Skardu.

Day 04

We drive in jeep along the Indus and Shyok valleys before turning northern upto Hushe valley to reach the road head to little village of Hushe (10500ft). The roads in this area are subject to landslides and broken bridges, so we may have to start walking before Hushe. Overnight camping.

Day 05

We begin walking towards the huge bulk of Mashebrum before turning east to reach our camp at Saischo (11250ft) situated at the confluence of the Gondogoro and Saraksa valleys. There is plenty of time to bath in refreshing mountain streams or to admire the rugged peaks which tower above the Saraksa Glacier. Overnight camping.

Day 06

Trek towards K-7 base camp, today we can see spectacular views of K-7, K-6 and Snameka Peaks. Overnight camping.

Day 07

Trek back to Saischo, camping.

Day 08

Trek along Gondogoro Glacier to the summer hamlet and pastures at Gondogoro (12800ft) following the often-steep moraines ridge. Descending onto the glacier itself, we soon reach the camp Dalsangpa (13500ft) surrounded by rocky summits including the huge mass of Masherbrum itself. Overnight camping.

Day 09

A more difficult day as we walk up the glacier to Gondogoro base camp, sometimes on moraine and some times on ice,. All the time beneath the impressive spire of the Laila Peak. We make time in the afternoon to give those who need it a certain amount of practice in the use of ice-axes and crampons, overnight camping.

Day 10

Starting in the small hours, those of the group who are suitable fit and acclimatized can attempt the summit of Gondogoro Peak. We leave the base camp 15500ft and climb over rocky ground to ascend the headwall of the Gondogoro Valley. The snowfield, which leads to the summit (18700ft) progresses in a series of steep steps which may require ropes to safeguard the ascent. From the summit there are incredible views to Masherbrum and Laila Peaks to the west and Chogolisa and Hidden Peak to the south and east. Overnight camping.

Day 11

Rest day at Xuspang, camping

Day 12    

Trek back to Slasngpa, camping

Day 13

Trek to Saischo, camping

Day 14  

Trek to Hushe, camping

Day 15    

Rest day at Hushe

Day 16    

Drive to Khaplu, cam at Polo ground. Afternoon visit to Chaqchan Mosque and forts.

Day 17    

Drive to Skardu, transfer to hotel.

Day 18    

Morning fly to Islamabad and free day in the city, or drive to Besham, overnight in hotel

Day 19    

Stay in Rawalpindi, if flown or drive from Besham to Rawalpindi, transfer to hotel.

Day 20    

Fly out to onward destination.
