Shandur Polo Festival


Polo of the orient regarded as the game of kings and king of the games has been played from centuries in the Northern regions of Pakistan. Skardu and Khaplu are the home of traditional polo in Baltistan. According to a legend it was originated in northern region of Pakistan and spread to far flung places as far as China, Central Asia and India. The archaic chronicles of Chinese and Moghuls provide testimony that the game was played in wild war like style of Battle field and hundred players participated at a time. The kings witnessed the polo as the players adopted winning tactics and strategies as of the battle field. The legendary fables relate when a prince was killed during a game anti the emperor executed the players. Moghuls played polo at night with burning balls. Present day polo in the Northern Areas though follows some rules but is still played in a wild fashion.

 

Itinerary

Day 01 Islamabad

Upon arrival at Islamabad Airport meet your guide and transfer to your hotel. Afternoon sightseeing of the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad. We drive on the Mall by an ancient basilica in gothic architecture and other buildings. Visit Raja Bazar the ancient city center in the old Rawalpindi city. Raja Bazar retains the hoary fervor with its lively oriental markets in bright tinge, simmering with folks from different walks of life. Amidst the market festooned with    garland shops, and stalls of fortune tellers, chewing tobacco and snuff sellers, money changers we might come across the astonishing sight of a snake charmer with his cobras (a gypsy    people of Dravidian ethnic origin).Proceed to Islamabad the modern capital of Pakistan, drive past by Government buildings the Presidency planned an American architect EwardDurrel Stone, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and secretariat blocks planned by a group Italian architects Fernorolli, Rosili and Geoponti. We arrive at Shah Faisal Mosque the largest in the world. Proceed to Damin-a-Koh an elevated photogenic point for a panoramic- view of entire Islamabad. Islamabad has developed as a rendezvous of various cultures and ultimately a cosmopolitan metropolis. We drive back to the hotel. overnight at hotel.

DAY 02 Islamabad-Sauidu Sharif

Drive by jeep to Saidu Sharif Swat en route visit TakhtBahi buddhist monastery on arrival at Saidu Shariff transfer to hotel, sightseeing of bazar and visit Islampur the weavers village. Overnight at hotel.

Day 03    Saidu Sharif-Chitral

Drive by jeep to Chitral across the mighty Lowari Pass. On arrival at Chitral transfer to hotel.Overnight at hotel.

Day 04    Chitral-Kalash Valleys-Chitral

Drive to Bomburet village of Kalash valley, walking tour of the village, later drive to Birir  another Kalash valley and drive back to Chitral    .
Overnight at hotel.

Day 05    Chitral-Shandur Pass

Drive by jeep to Shandur Pass the highest Polo Ground in the world to witness the final polo match between the teams of Chitral and Gilgit. Overnight in tents.

Day 06-07  Shandur Pass

Watch the polo matches. Overnights in tents.

Day 08    Shundar Pass

Watch the Polo match. Overnight in tents.

Day 09    Shandur-Phander

Drive by jeep to Phander famous as Little Kashmir.Overnight in tents.

Day 10    Phander-Gilgit

Drive to Gilgit and transfer to Hotel for overnight.

Day 11    Gilgit-Besham

Drive to Besham and transfer to hotel. Overnight at hotel.  

Day 12     Besham-Islamabad 

Drive to Islamabad and transfer to your residence.

Day  13    Islamabad-Onward

Transfer to airport in transit for your onward destination. Assistance at the airport.
